故事背景在南太平洋島嶼，一位酋長的女兒「莫娜」的祖母正在跟小孩們敘說一個傳說故事：世界初開始只有一片浩瀚的汪洋，直到海洋之母「塔菲緹」來到人間創造了一切。然而有壞人想偷取塔菲緹的心，妄想得到創造萬物的力量，有一天，持有魔法魚鉤的半神人「毛伊」穿過浩瀚大海來到塔菲緹的島，成功偷取了塔菲緹的心。沒了心的塔菲緹開始瓦解並釋放出可怕的黑暗，毛伊在逃跑時遇到另一位也想偷取心的惡魔「帖卡」，毛伊從空中被擊落，從此消失無蹤，而他的魔法魚鉤也跟著塔菲緹的心一起沉入大海。直到過了一千年的現在，帖卡跟其他惡魔仍在尋找那顆心，而那些隱藏在陰影下的黑暗也依然在四處擴散，使一座座島的生命枯竭直到世界崩壞。但在那之前，有人會找回那顆心，那個人將揚帆啟航找到毛伊並帶著他穿越浩瀚大海歸還塔菲緹的心拯救全人類。
